Mini Guatemalan Worry Dolls: Prenda Artesanal/Tradicional (Comércio Justo)
Fairtrade & Handmade product:
Guatemalan Worry dolls, Worry people or trouble dolls, are very small and colourful dolls traditionally hand made by the Mayan descent Indians who live in the highlands of Guatemala. They make their living mostly from agriculture in the rural areas of the country and are often dependent on alternative forms of income.
Used to relieve worry and anxiety:
According to folklore, a person (usually a children) who cannot sleep due to worrying can express their worries to the dolls and place them under their pillow before going to sleep. The dolls are thought to worry in the person's place, thereby permitting a peacefull sleep and a relaxed wake up without worries, fears or anxieties which have been magically taken away by the dolls during the night. Parents may remove the dolls during the night, reinforcing the child's belief that the worry is gone.
Often used by medical practitioners today, they are prescribed alongside mainstream or alternative medicine giving a placebo effect for the child - the well studied psychological benefits of releasing worries.
«In the highland villages of Guatemala, where the majority of the people are of Mayan descent, a story is told:
It is said that if you tell one worry to each worry person when you go to bed at night and place them under your pillow, in the morning all your worries will have been taken away.»
